Book Recommendation of the Week – Tuck Everlasting

Tuck Everlasting – Natalie Babbitt

Easily one of the best books ever written, in my humble opinion.  There aren’t a lot of books that talk about the cycle of life in such a way that really make you think about the choices you would make if you had any say in it and the consequences that would result from your choices.  We are introduced to the Tucks who have a dangerous secret and Winnie, the girl who discovers their secret.  While this book was written over 35 years ago it asks the timeless question about living forever.  Whether you are in a military family or not we will all be faced with explaining death to ourselves and others.  This book will help to start the conversations that are some of the hardest to have.

Tips:

* Read it together as a family, make it a part of your routine to read it together each day or night

* Talk about what would be the benefits of living forever but also the downfalls (like the Tucks uncover)

* If your family has lost someone talk openly about the decisions the Tucks and Winnie make

* Focus on the choice to live every moment with the uncertainty of what is around the corner

* If you really don’t think your family will read the book, rent the movie (released in 2002)
